This interactive map depicts terrain roughness and average annual solar insolation.
The original data for the terrain roughness map was the NOAA/NGDC-Global Relief Data - ETOPO1 dataset. The ETOPO1 digital elevation data was converted to slope data using a derivative of demtools.
Insolation data came from the NASA Surface meteorology and Solar Energy: Global Data Sets site -- in particular, the Meteorology and Solar Energy page. (Free registration is required.)
The map tiles are generated using an instance of mapserver. The UI is driven by jQuery 1.3.2 and OpenLayers 2.8.
